The Art of Gathering: How to Create a Beautiful Games Table

Because the loveliest homes aren't just beautifully styled — they're made for spending time together

A beautiful games table is about so much more than playing games. Discover how to create an inviting space that combines elegant interiors with family time, friendly competition and the simple pleasure of being together.

There's something rather wonderful about gathering around a table for a game. A little friendly competition, plenty of laughter and, perhaps most importantly, time spent together without the distraction of screens.

In a world where so much of our entertainment happens on a screen, I love the idea of bringing back the simple pleasure of playing games together. Whether it's a leisurely game of chess, a fiercely contested round of cards or a family board game that brings out everyone's competitive streak, these are often the moments we remember.

And why shouldn't the place where we gather be just as beautiful as the rest of our home?

A thoughtfully styled games table can become a lovely feature in its own right — an inviting corner that encourages family and friends to sit down, stay a while and enjoy each other's company.

The best part? You don't need a dedicated games room to create one.

1. Find a Space That Invites People to Gather

One of the things I love about a games table is that it can work almost anywhere.

A quiet corner of a sitting room, a sunny spot beside a window, a library or even a generous landing can become a wonderful little gathering place.

The secret is to make it feel intentional rather than simply placing a table in an empty space.

Think about how people will use it. Is there room to pull up a couple of comfortable chairs? Somewhere to put a cup of tea or a glass of wine? Enough light for an afternoon game that might unexpectedly continue into the evening?

I particularly love the idea of a games table in a sitting room, where it becomes part of everyday family life rather than something reserved for special occasions.

After all, the more inviting the space, the more likely everyone is to use it.

2. Choose a Table That's Beautiful in Its Own Right

A games table doesn't have to look like traditional games-room furniture.

In fact, some of the loveliest examples are simply beautiful occasional tables that happen to be perfect for playing games.

I adore the combination of rich wood and delicate gold detailing. It has a timeless elegance that works wonderfully with both traditional and contemporary interiors.

A beautifully finished table can hold its own as a decorative piece, even when the chessboard has been put away.

Consider the proportions, too. A smaller table is ideal for chess, cards or backgammon, while a larger surface offers more flexibility for family board games.

And don't feel everything has to match. An antique-inspired table alongside contemporary upholstered chairs can create a much more interesting and personal look.

3. Make Comfort Part of the Experience

There's nothing quite like settling in for a game that lasts longer than anyone expected!

Comfortable seating makes all the difference.

Upholstered dining chairs, elegant occasional chairs or even a pair of beautifully restored vintage chairs can transform a games table into a place where people genuinely want to linger.

I love mixing textures here. Soft velvet against polished wood, perhaps a patterned cushion or a little footstool nearby, adds warmth and character.

The aim isn't to create a formal games room. It's to make a little corner that feels welcoming, relaxed and entirely at home with the rest of your interiors.

4. Let the Games Become Part of the Décor

Who says games need to be hidden away in a cupboard?

A beautiful chess set, a wooden backgammon board or a vintage box of playing cards can be decorative objects in their own right.

I particularly love the sculptural quality of chess pieces. Arranged on a lovely board, they can look every bit as stylish as an ornament or a collection of treasured objects.

You could also display favourite games on a nearby shelf, alongside books, photographs and other personal pieces.

The trick is not to overstyle the table. Leave enough space for people to actually play!

A games table should always feel ready for an impromptu game, rather than looking like a display nobody dares touch.

5. Create a Little Atmosphere

As with so many things in interiors, lighting can completely change the mood.

During the day, a games table beside a window can be a lovely place to sit with a coffee and enjoy a quiet game.

In the evening, softer lighting creates an entirely different atmosphere.

A beautiful table lamp nearby, warm pools of light and perhaps a candle safely positioned away from the playing area can make the space feel wonderfully intimate.

And then there are the little extras.

A tray with drinks, a bowl of something delicious to nibble on, perhaps some background music — suddenly an ordinary evening feels like an occasion.

It doesn't need to be elaborate. Often, the simplest touches are the ones that make people feel most at home.

6. Bring Back the Family Games Night

This is perhaps my favourite part of all.

We spend so much time thinking about how our homes look, but I think it's equally important to think about how they make us feel — and how we actually live in them.

Some of my happiest memories are of the simplest occasions: everyone gathered together, a game underway, plenty of conversation and the inevitable disagreement about who's winning!

There's something rather lovely about creating little family traditions around these moments.

Perhaps Friday evening becomes games night. Perhaps the chessboard stays out for an ongoing family challenge. Or perhaps the table simply becomes somewhere people naturally gravitate towards when friends come over.

A beautiful home should never feel too precious to enjoy.

And a games table is a wonderful reminder that good interiors aren't just about the furniture we choose — they're about the life that happens around it.

A Beautiful Home Is One That's Lived In

For me, the most successful interiors are those that combine style with a genuine sense of warmth and welcome.

A games table captures that perfectly.

It can be elegant, beautifully crafted and thoughtfully styled, while still being somewhere for laughter, conversation, competition and connection.

So whether you have space for a dedicated games table or simply a little corner waiting to be transformed, why not create somewhere that invites everyone to gather?

You might find it becomes one of the most loved spots in your home.

Shona's Style Secret

Don't save your most beautiful furniture for special occasions. Choose pieces that encourage people to sit down, relax and spend time together. A gorgeous table with a chessboard ready to play is infinitely more inviting than a perfectly styled room nobody uses.
