The Art of Creating a Beautiful Reading Nook

How to turn an overlooked corner into your favourite place to escape

Create your own little sanctuary with a beautiful reading nook. From comfortable seating and soft textures to thoughtful lighting and personal touches, discover how to transform even the smallest corner into a stylish, inviting retreat.

There's something rather lovely about having a little corner of the house that's entirely your own. Somewhere to curl up with a good book, enjoy a morning coffee or simply escape the busyness of everyday life for half an hour.

And the wonderful thing about a reading nook is that you don't need a library, a separate sitting room or even very much space. Sometimes all it takes is a beautiful chair, a little imagination and a few carefully chosen pieces.

For me, the secret is to create somewhere that feels inviting and personal, rather than overly designed. A reading nook should look as though it has evolved naturally within your home — somewhere you genuinely want to spend time.

1. Start with the perfect chair

Comfort is absolutely essential, but that doesn't mean compromising on style!

I particularly love a classic wingback chair. There's something wonderfully cocooning about its high back and generous proportions, and it works equally well in a traditional country house or a more contemporary interior.

An upholstered armchair in a beautiful neutral fabric is also incredibly versatile. You can change its personality entirely with cushions, throws and the pieces you style around it.

My advice? Choose a chair you genuinely love and build the rest of your little sanctuary around it.

2. Find an unexpected corner

One of my favourite things about interior styling is finding opportunities in spaces we might otherwise overlook.

A corner of a bedroom, the end of a hallway, a landing or even an awkward alcove can become a lovely reading spot.

You don't necessarily need lots of furniture. In fact, a single statement chair can sometimes make much more impact than trying to fill every available inch.

And don't feel everything needs to be positioned against a wall. Angling a chair slightly into the room can make the whole arrangement feel more relaxed and welcoming.

3. Give your nook a little personality

This is where the fun really begins!

I love mixing traditional shapes with unexpected patterns and decorative pieces. In this reading nook, the soft cream upholstery creates a calm foundation, whilst the beautiful botanical wallpaper brings a sense of romance and escapism.

The blue-and-white patterned cushion introduces a contrasting contemporary element, whilst the chinoiserie garden stool adds colour, interest and a little playfulness.

It's a lovely example of how different styles can sit happily together without everything needing to match.

And if a statement wallpaper feels too adventurous, a beautiful piece of artwork, an antique mirror or even a collection of favourite prints can create a similar sense of individuality.

4. Think beyond the traditional side table

Every reading nook needs somewhere to put a cup of tea, a book or perhaps a little vase of flowers.

But it doesn't necessarily need to be a conventional side table.

I love using decorative garden stools, small antique tables or even an interesting occasional piece that might originally have been intended for another room.

These are the details that make a home feel collected rather than simply furnished.

And choosing pieces that can move around your home is a wonderful way to make your interiors more versatile and sustainable.

5. Layer texture, lighting and comfort

A beautiful reading nook should appeal to all the senses.

Add a wonderfully soft throw, a cushion that offers proper support and perhaps a small rug to define the space.

Lighting is particularly important. Natural daylight is lovely, of course, but a well-positioned reading lamp means your corner can be enjoyed on darker afternoons and evenings too.

I prefer warm, gentle lighting that creates atmosphere whilst still providing enough focused light to read comfortably.

And a little home fragrance can make the space feel even more special — although I'd keep it subtle.

6. Finish with something personal

The most beautiful interiors always tell us something about the people who live in them.

Perhaps it's a much-loved book, a little collection of treasures gathered on your travels, a favourite photograph or a branch brought in from the garden.

These finishing touches don't need to be expensive or elaborate.

In fact, I often think it's the simplest details that make a space feel most welcoming.

A little corner of calm

Ultimately, creating a beautiful reading nook isn't about following a particular style or buying lots of new things.

It's about making the most of the space you already have, bringing together pieces you love and creating somewhere that encourages you to slow down for a moment.

And in our increasingly busy lives, I think that's a rather lovely luxury.

Shona's Style Secret:

Don't be afraid to mix things up. A traditional chair, a contemporary cushion and an unexpected vintage find can create something far more interesting than a perfectly matching furniture set.
