Styling with Stems or Branches for an elevated look
There's still so much beauty in January
I'm often asked why I'm regularly in the garden or on walkabouts foraging for stems and branches! Well partly because I love gardening, spending time in nature and walking the dogs, but also because I love the look of simple architectural shapes and seasonal stems rather than over styled faux or non-seasonal blooms. A restrained seasonal look elevates a space, keeps us grounded and connected with our outdoor space and the time of year plus foraged stems have the added benefits of being of being both free and sustainable too.
Using foraged stems and branches to create tasteful seasonal displays is a quiet, intuitive way to bring the outdoors in while staying grounded in the rhythm of the year. Unlike store-bought florals, foraged materials carry an inherent sense of place and time—bare branches in winter, budding twigs in early spring, leafy stems in summer, and seed pods or turning leaves in autumn. Their beauty lies in restraint and authenticity.
The key to tasteful foraging is editing. Choose shapes with strong lines or interesting movement rather than gathering in excess. A single branch with twisting form can be more impactful than a crowded arrangement. Consider scale: tall vessels suit long, architectural branches, while shorter, irregular stems feel at home in simple jars or handmade ceramics. Neutral or earthy containers allow the natural textures to remain the focus.
Seasonality should guide both color and composition. Fresh green growth feels right in loose, airy arrangements, while colder months call for sparer displays—perhaps a few sculptural branches or dried grasses. Allow negative space; emptiness gives the arrangement elegance and prevents it from feeling decorative for decoration’s sake.
Thoughtful placement matters just as much as the stems themselves. Entryways, dining tables, and quiet corners benefit from organic forms that soften hard edges and add life without clutter. Over time, these displays evolve as the materials dry, fade, or shift—an impermanence that adds to their charm.
Ultimately, foraged seasonal displays celebrate observation, patience, and respect for nature. They encourage a slower, more mindful approach to styling—one that values simplicity, balance, and the understated beauty of what already exists around us.
